Bedroom Series Part 4: Top 12 Decorating Do's and Don'ts

In this four part bedroom series, we will share with you how to calculate the cost of your remodel and 7 ways to change your space without knocking down walls.  We will also share with you some things to consider and 12 dos and don’ts to help you prepare for your next project.
Bedroom remodeling projects can be a fun and less intimidating project to take on.  Here are 12 Decorating Do's and Don'ts from top designers at House Beautiful.

DO:
  • Find Inspiration in your Travels.  Travel provides excellent inspiration when decorating your home.  Frame pictures from your trip, commission a painting based on trip photos, or display souvenirs in your room.
  • Use Dramatic Color in Small Spaces.  Color is the quickest and easiest way to transform a space, it also creates a dramatic design element.
  • Test Paint Colors in a Big Way.  Testing paint colors on your walls is a must, so make sure you create a big swatch and not just a little spot.  A 3 feet by 3 feet space is recommended.
  • Trust Your Instincts.  We all have different tastes and points of view, so at the end of the day make the space the way you want!
  • Draw the Eye with an Interesting Piece.  Don’t forget about the axial view…when looking down a corridor you want a special object at the end to draw you forward.  A sculpture, a chandelier, something that will define the space and pull you in.
  • Pay Attention to Doors and Entrances.  House Beautiful encourages home owners to make the openings between rooms as high as possible.  It creates a sense of openness, lightness, and grandeur in a space.

DON’T:
  • Use White Décor if you have Kids or Pets.  Unless you don’t care about stains or don’t mind constantly cleaning, white décor isn’t in the cards for those with young children or animals.
  • Forget about Seating.  These days there is a more minimalist feel in homes, but don’t forget about adequate seating!
  • Be Afraid to Splurge on Great Pieces.  Invest in at least one great quality piece, one amazing piece can really carry an entire room when decorated right.
  • Ignore Architectural Details.  Respect the architecture of a space, it will create a more cohesive overall design.
  • Make a Room too Formulaic.  It’s a good idea to start with classic furniture and a functional layout, and then add in some funky décor to relax the room and keep it from feeling sterile and generic.
  • Go Overboard.  “Just because you can doesn’t mean you should”.
