Bathroom Series Part 1: Things to Do

A well-done bathroom remodel will not only increase the value of your home, but it will provide you with many years of pleasure and comfort.  Conversely, an amateur job may not give you as large of a return on your investment, you may not end up liking the design or functionality, and it would be a headache for years to come.

In our four part series, we will share with you seven dos and seven don’ts to consider when remodeling your bathroom.  We will also share with you some tips and design ideas to help you prepare for your exciting new project.

Here are seven good ideas from Consumer Reports when remodeling your bathroom:

Budget for the unexpected
Talk to someone who has been through a home remodel and they will tell you that something unexpected always comes up.  Bathrooms in particular often have hidden water damage from a leaky shower or toilet. Make sure you provide yourself with a10-15% cushion when creating your budget.

Hide the toilet
Style and functionality can work together when you create a hidden area for the toilet.  It’s nice to either create a “room-within-the-room”, build a half wall, or get creative and hide it behind a piece of furniture such as an armoire or dresser.

Do choose appropriate surfaces
Bathroom surfaces will take quite a bit of abuse, so in addition to looking nice you want to make sure they will hold up to the heavy traffic.  Porcelain is a favorite amongst designers, as it granite and quartz.

Splurge on the shower
Showers are more than just a space to wash yourself, they are a relaxing, sensual experience.  Today you can add on body sprays, steam generators, or specialized showerheads.  Don’t overlook this important fixture!

Consider water efficiency
In recent years we have made great strides in water efficiency for showerheads, toilets, and faucets.  Not only will this contribute to helping the environment, it will also save you money on your water bill!

Make room on the vanity
If you ask most homeowners what the number one thing on their wish list would be, they would say vanity space!  It’s important that you allow yourself as large of a vanity space as your bathroom footprint will allow.

Provide adequate ventilation and light
Proper ventilation is key in preventing mold and mildew from breeding in your newly remodeled bathroom.  Lighting is important as well, as natural light will help to keep mold at bay as well as creating a well lit space for you to enjoy.

  1. I just love your Consumer Reports. Lighting is a great way to change the looks and feel of your bathroom. Your lighting should be flattering with few shadows.
